Tree Trimming and PlantingTrimming Never attempt to trim a tree close to or touching a power line. We routinely inspect for trees that interfere with power lines and trim them on a planned schedule.
During a power outage caused by a storm or hurricane, it may be necessary for us to remove trees or limbs that have fallen on power lines.
What you can do
Tree Trimming Contacts: Planting Before you plant a tree, shrub, or garden plants, make sure you know where your underground lines are. Call 1-800-DIG-TESS (800-344-8377) two business days before you dig and TNMP will come to your home and mark utility-line locations. It's smart, safe, free and it's the law. Select the right tree for the location. Trees at maturity must be a minimum of 15 feet away from power lines. It's also important to plant trees 10 feet or more from underground padmount transformers – those green boxes sometimes seen in residential areas. Tree roots can interfere with underground utilities. To prevent future power line problems, remove tall growing trees and replant with low-growing varieties. Learn more about tree planting and maintenance from our tree care guidebook, "From Seed to Shade": TNMP's Vegetation Management Program offers free woodchips to our customers.
