Tree Trimming and Planting

Trimming

Never attempt to trim a tree close to or touching a power line.

We routinely inspect for trees that interfere with power lines and trim them on a planned schedule.

  • Debris and brush from scheduled work will be removed by TNMP.
    • Wood will be left on site and cut to firewood size and stacked.
  •  If we need to trim a tree in your yard, we'll attempt to contact you before doing any work.

During a power outage caused by a storm or hurricane, it may be necessary for us to remove trees or limbs that have fallen on power lines.

  • In order to quickly restore service, debris from storm damage will not be removed by TNMP and will need to be discarded by the tenant.

What you can do

  • Prune trees on your property to prevent tree limbs from growing into power lines.
  • If you want to trim or remove a tree that is close to or interfering with service wires (the electric wires that go from the pole to your house), call TNMP to evaluate the situation.
  • TNMP will, at no charge, temporarily disconnect your service so that you, or a professional arborist, can safely trim around electric lines.

Planting

Before you plant a tree, shrub, or garden plants, make sure you know where your underground lines are. Call 1-800-DIG-TESS (800-344-8377) two business days before you dig and TNMP will come to your home and mark utility-line locations. It's smart, safe, free and it's the law.

Select the right tree for the location. Trees at maturity must be a minimum of 15 feet away from power lines. It's also important to plant trees 10 feet or more from underground padmount transformers – those green boxes sometimes seen in residential areas.  Tree roots can interfere with underground utilities.

To prevent future power line problems, remove tall growing trees and replant with low-growing varieties. Learn more about tree planting and maintenance from our tree care guidebook, "From Seed to Shade":
