TNMP Program Provides Energy Savings
To Clifton Housing Authority

(Las Colinas, Texas) Residents of the Clifton Housing Authority could begin seeing savings in their energy bills soon with the recent completion of numerous energy efficiency improvements. The improvements are part of TNMP’s Low-Income Weatherization Program, one of many energy efficiency programs TNMP offers to its customers.

Through its Low-Income Weatherization Program, TNMP is making approximately $175,000 available annually to not-for-profit agencies that can provide energy efficiency improvements to the homes of income-eligible customers in the TNMP electric distribution service area. Energy-efficiency measures include efficient lighting, ENERGY STAR® refrigerators and air conditioners, solar screens, and attic and wall insulation. The maximum allowable expenditure under the program is $6,500 per home.

The Clifton project is one of the first to benefit from this program in the Central Texas area. Earlier this year, a similar project was implemented at the Whitney Housing Authority.  Because each apartment in the project is individually metered, individual residents should be able to reap the benefits of energy savings.

Among the improvements to the apartment units were:

  • Energy-efficient central air-conditioning systems

  • Solar screens

  • Compact fluorescent lighting

  • ENERGY STAR® ceiling fans

“Our energy efficiency programs take a number of different approaches to reduce energy consumption throughout our service area,” said Jim Cosper, director, Texas Operations. “That helps individual customers, and it also helps the environment by reducing the need for more electricity generation.”

TNMP Energy Efficiency / Add One

“We’re really pleased with the project,” said Butch Lauderdale, executive director of the Clifton Housing Authority.  “It will increase the energy efficiency of the units and will save the residents a significant amount on their energy bills.”

The Clifton project was implemented by Economic Opportunities Advancement Corporation, a not-for-profit community action agency based in Waco. Bobby Deike, EOAC’s weatherization director, added that in 2009 the TNMP funds helped the EOAC reduce the energy costs in more than 80 low-income households in Bosque, Mc Lennan, and Hill Counties.

Throughout the TNMP service area agencies including the EOAC treated more than 115 homes in 2009.  Other programs currently offered by TNMP include financial incentives for ENERGY STAR® homebuilders and a pilot to provide incentives for installation of solar photovoltaic systems. The programs are regularly reviewed and updated. For a current list and eligibility information, visit www.tnpeefficiency.com.

TNMP is a transmission and distribution service provider that delivers power to about 231,000 customers on behalf of 65 retail electric providers in Texas. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of PNM Resources.
